Topic: `Reforming the Construction Sector in Qatar post WC2022’
Presenters, Dr. Alexandre Amato and Steven Humphrey
With special guest Ahmed Al Ansari – From Ashghal `Public Works Authority’ Qatar
Event Overview:
- The existing building stock in Qatar is probably large enough to accommodate existing and foreseeable demand.
- Most of all the large-scale infrastructure developments will have been mostly completed by 2022.
- There is likely to be a considerable hiatus after this in construction industry activity.
- Is this not an opportunity to reform the construction sector along very different lines than its current configuration?
- Much more activity around Facilities and Asset Management - much more emphasis on retro-fitting (some really extensive projects - stripping the building back to the structure) and upgrading both buildings and neighbourhoods. A lot more emphasis on 'smart-buildings and cities' so upgrading services will be very important.
- The sector itself will be required to be much more sustainable - zero-waste to landfill etc.
- Much more emphasis on retraining and reshaping best practice so education plays a big part.
- The development of MMC and extensive use of prefabrication and site assembly.
- Development of BIM and Lean construction practices.
- Finally, the associated construction materials and products manufacturing sector in Qatar is stimulated and developed by the above changes to the sector to produce truly sustainable materials and products.
