Dr. Amato has more than 30 years of experience in the construction industry. He has worked in both the private and public sectors in the UK, South East Asia, and the Middle East. Since 1992, his research has focused on the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to assess quantitatively the environmental impact of buildings, construction systems, and products.
The energy crisis in the mid-70s occurred when I was a second-year architectural student and provoked me and society at large into a deep reflective response that went beyond consideration of the primary energy issue, to questioning humankind's unthinking exploitation of the planet. This talk will review the evolution from energy conscious design of the 70s, through sustainability and now to 'restorative sustainability' and then provide examples of what this might mean in terms of design principles, building and urban form. This amounts to nothing less than a new architectural form, in other words BIOTECTURE - with a correspondingly new aesthetic. What might that be?
