Nicholas Boys Smith MBE is the founding chairman of Create Streets, a design practice, town-builder, and think tank. He has researched and written extensively on development, planning, and the links between design with wellbeing and public support in a range of articles, books, and national media. He was chair of the British government’s Office for Place and co-chair of the influential Building Better Building Beautiful Commission, described as “seminal” by the then Secretary of State for Housing. Between 2016 and 2022 Nicholas was a Commissioner of Historic England. Professor Carlos Moreno has called him “the UK’s leading figure in urban living and the beauty of cities.” His books include No Free ParkingHeart in the Right Street, Beyond Location, and Of Streets and Squares. He was awarded an MBE for services to design and place-making.
