Energy systems models are increasingly used by governments of both developed and developing countries to generate crucial evidence underpinning their climate change policy. Different types of energy systems models exist that can be used in isolation or jointly and can support informed discussions around key policy decisions. Funded by QNRF (grant NPRP13S-0204-200250) and in partnership with Imperial College London, Kahramaa and Earthna, QEERI is developing Qatar TIMES, the country’s first full energy systems model. TIMES models are the most widely used by governments to inform climate change policy; the UK government has used this model for over 20 years. Other research teams in Qatar and elsewhere in the GCC are also developing energy systems models at different scales, seeking to inform policymakers. The workshop will bring together experts from Qatar and the GCC who will share their experience developing these tools and working with policymakers. The relative strengths and limitations of the tools and the importance of collaboration, also across the GCC, will be explored. The workshop is aimed at decision-makers in government and industry, as well as the research community, and will seek to provide them with insights into this important area and stimulate discussion on how it can be further developed.
