Qatar is one of the most water stressed countries in the world due to their arid climate and limited amount of resource water. The only source of freshwater in Qatar is groundwater which is currently being depleted due to over extraction. The stress levels on water are expected to increase in the future due to population increase, climate change, industrial operations, and agricultural sector growth. Qatar’s population is increasing, reaching nearly 3.0 million in 2023, a significant rise from nearly 2.0 million in 2012. To meet the water demand for its growing population and industrial activities, Qatar relies heavily on desalination, specifically thermal desalination. The country is also one of the largest oil, gas, and urea exporters in the world. In general, large industries and plants require immense amounts of water in their processes as well as for cooling purposes. To ensure the water security of Qatar as well as developing it into a more sustainable country, the management of its water resources is crucial.
