Meeting at the beginning of the old causeway at 2:30 pm. Start of walk to island at 2:45 pm. Return to Cars at 4 pm. What are we going to do at Purple Island? We will gather at Purple Island, equipped with trash-bags and plastic gloves. We will walk around the Island and collect as much trash/plastic as we can find. Afterwards we will put all bags into trash containers. Why are we cleaning up Purple Island? Purple Island is a delicate environment and the mangroves that surround it are home to thousands of young fish and crabs before they swim out into the open sea. Many people left their rubbish from picnicking and plastic bottles behind. Plastic that gets into the environment will break into pieces. These pieces often end up in the belly of sea-birds, fish and turtles. Eventually they will die and the fish that we eat will be contaminated with plastic waste. Anyone is welcome to join. Your participation will be an important contribution to maintaining this beautiful place enjoyable for other families and individuals. At the same time you can enjoy beautiful nature and a visit to the mangroves. What to bring? • A small daypack to carry your personal items when wading to the Island • Please bring your own drinks (preferably in refillable bottles) • A hat as there is no shade. • Sun protection lotion/cream • Sturdy outdoor sandals that can get wet (As the old causeway that used to lead to the island has been dismantled recently, we will have to wade through sand/mud and knee-deep water to reach Purple Island) • A small ziploc bag to keep your valuables like mobile phone and wallet dry We will bring: • trashbags • disposable vinyl-gloves • a pair of shovels
