Pioneering the implementation of eco-friendly infrastructure & transportation

In compliance with Qatar’s National Vision 2030, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) is developing it’s transportation infrastructure to provide an integrated, multimodal transportation system that offers safe, reliable, sustainable and eco-friendly services.

Qatar intends to be a leader in technology and environmental sustainability with a focus on achieving the highest sustainability standards to reduce carbon emissions to meet air quality standards in order to limit the impact of pollution-related illnesses and climate change.

During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar will deploy mass transit electric buses fleet to make it the first World Cup to do so.

Amongst the strategies implemented by the MOTC are the following:

1.      Pioneering the transition to electric buses in the State of Qatar for which the MOTC will install more than 635 electric chargers at more than 40 sites under construction to serve the fleet of approximately 1,200 electric buses. The electric charging equipment will be powered with 10,720 state of the art Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels at the bus depot in Lusail which is capable of generating four megawatts of power, making it the first bus depot in the region to rely on solar energy as a renewable source of clean energy.

2.      Gradual transformation to electric cars in association with Kahramaa represented by the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency "Tarsheed" have launched the Electric Vehicles and Charging Infrastructure Guideline in the State of Qatar. This guideline provides a framework for the establishment of infrastructure regulations for electric vehicles in the country.

The MOTC are coordinating with various government agencies, institutions and private entities to implement the strategy by providing electric charging equipment at their workplaces, in order to reach 10% of private electric car transportation by 2022.

3.      Development of sustainable infrastructure that achieves a minimum 3 star sustainability rating based on the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), making it one of the very few organizations in the State of Qatar to achieve such ratings.

4.      Supporting the implementation of electric scooters and bikes which is considered as an environmentally friendly option with zero carbon emissions, especially for short trips.

5.      Implementation of e-logistics system at Doha Port
