This workshop considers the concept of circularity from a sectoral aspect, highlighting the need for government policy and legislation for a cross-sector collaborative approach - as follows: -

• The Built Environment – Qatar’s largest employer – potential hiatus after 2022 – a chance to reform the industry based around prefabrication, MMoC (modern methods of construction) and robotics?
• Hospitality – a large and growing sector, but can it be truly sustainable? How could Qatar rethink its tourism potential and value based on circular economy principles; how could Qatar’s Ecotourism offering be in line with ecological conservation?
• New Industries – what burgeoning ‘manufacturing and tertiary’ industries could emerge from the development of Qatar’s non-hydrocarbon sectors (e.g., the health sector – precision medicine) and how might these be provoked by the adoption of circularity and sustainable principles?
• Fashion, Plastics and Consumerism: from ‘cradle to grave’ their lifecycle impact; an assessment of the challenges and opportunities that emerge from a progressive reformation of these sectors over their service life-cycle – do these disparate sectors actually represent an opportunity for Qatar’s economy? – and if so how can their material production and disposal be sustainable? Or do we need to change and completely revise our attitude to the consumption of these products?
• Domestic Waste and Packaging – represents approximately 50% by mass of the waste generated in most developed countries – what steps need to be taken if Qatar adopts advanced circularity concepts for their end of service life treatment.
